Historical Significance
Artistic Value
The first circulating paper money of the restored Ukrainian state. One of the earliest modern mass uses of the Trident that brought the Kyivan Rus symbol back into daily life even before its official adoption as the UNR state emblem in February 1918. The reverse carries four languages which reflects the inclusive policy of the Central Rada toward a multiethnic population.
Narbut’s iconic national style that blends Ukrainian baroque motifs with crisp modern ornament. Trident medallions, guilloche frames, refined lettering and a warm yellow-orange palette that earned the note the nickname “fried egg”. This design became a landmark of 20th-century Ukrainian graphic art.
